In Session 4, participants will dive deeper into historical information related to environmental (in)justices to learn more about the intersection of chemistry and health and environmental issues, in relation to environmental justice and advocacy through Green Chemistry.

This session will include examples of chemical disasters and their impact on the people in the surrounding areas. The focus will be on the implications for marginalized members of society and the role of socioeconomic status in determining where chemical disasters are likely to occur.

This session aims to empower educators to help students understand the complex challenges at the intersection of chemistry and the environment, highlighting their role in addressing these issues. By integrating Green Chemistry principles, students will be empowered to think critically and apply sustainable solutions in their coursework and beyond.

At the end of the session, participants will write a brief activity connecting Green Chemistry to an environmental justice issue or disaster.

Session Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain the connections between chemistry and society, with a focus on environmental justice, and develop strategies to integrate these topics into chemistry instruction.
